Azure Certifications That Boost Salary in the US

TLDR

  • AZ-104 has the strongest public pay figure I found: Azure Administrator Associate averaged $148,849 in Skillsoft’s survey.
  • AZ-305 is the senior target, and Microsoft requires AZ-104 first. I found no sourced US pay number for it, so distrust any site that quotes one without a source.
  • AZ-204, AZ-500, AI-102 and DP-203 are retired. Their replacements are too new for reliable salary data.
  • A certification gets you interviews. Scope, experience and negotiation set the number.

I went through the top-ranking Azure salary guides, and most of the pay claims fell apart on the second click. One site says a certification adds $10,000. Another says $35,000. Several quote surveys they never name.

Worse, Microsoft retired a long list of exams that those guides still tell you to take. So here is what the data supports about Azure certifications that boost salary in the US, and where nobody has solid numbers yet.

Do Azure Certifications That Boost Salary in the US Really Work?

Partly, yes, and the market backs the effort. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median wage of $105,990 for computer and IT occupations in May 2024, against $49,500 for all occupations.

Computer network architects, the closest federal match to an Azure architect, had a median of $130,390 and a projected 12% job growth from 2024 to 2034, per the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook.

Demand has a source too. Synergy Research Group put Microsoft at about 21% of global cloud infrastructure spend in Q1 2026, second to AWS at 28%. Whether to add AWS is a separate question, which I cover in AWS vs Azure certifications.

The salary premium is where I slow down. DataCamp’s 2026 Azure guide cites an 8 to 15% average premium, roughly $10,000. That figure comes from aggregated surveys, not a controlled study. People who certify also tend to chase bigger roles and switch jobs, so the certificate gets credit for some of their ambition.

Sources disagree for plain reasons. A 2024 EPAM Anywhere roundup listed Azure cloud engineer averages of $111,328 on Salary.com, $131,442 on Glassdoor, $132,478 on ZipRecruiter and $134,994 on Talent.com. Each platform mixes base pay, bonus and job titles differently, and surveys count self-reported pay while job boards count what employers advertise.

Azure Certification Salary: What Each Credential Shows

Here are the active Azure credentials I would weigh for pay, with only the numbers I could source.

Plenty of cells say “no data.” That is the honest answer, and it beats an invented number.

The 2026 Retirements Most Salary Guides Miss

Microsoft is retiring a long list of Azure exams, yet many guides still sell them as the path to a raise. The Pearson VUE Microsoft updates page lists the dates.

Retired certificationRetirement dateReplacement
DP-203 Azure Data Engineer AssociateMarch 31, 2025DP-700 Fabric Data Engineer Associate
DP-100 Azure Data Scientist AssociateJune 1, 2026AI-300 MLOps Engineer Associate
AI-102 Azure AI Engineer AssociateJune 30, 2026AI-103 Azure AI App and Agent Developer Associate
AZ-204 Azure Developer AssociateJuly 31, 2026AI-200 Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate
AZ-500 Azure Security Engineer AssociateAugust 31, 2026SC-500 Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate

Microsoft announced the DP-203 retirement and the DP-700 replacement on its Tech Community blog. I break down that switch in DP-700 vs DP-203.

If you already hold one of these, the credential stays on your Microsoft Learn transcript until it expires, but you cannot renew it after the retirement date. If you are starting fresh, go straight to the replacement. My AI-200 guide and SC-500 vs AZ-500 comparison cover the two biggest switches.

Salary data for AI-103, AI-200 and SC-500 does not exist yet, and I will not pretend it does.

Azure Certification Salary by Experience Level

Entry level, 0 to 2 years

Start with AZ-900 if you have no cloud background, then aim for AZ-104. Fundamentals certifications do not expire, so that first one is a one-time cost. Recent Glassdoor submissions for Azure cloud engineers with 1 to 3 years of experience showed total pay near $102K and $121K. That is a small sample, so treat it as a signal, not a promise.

Mid-level, 3 to 6 years

This is where AZ-104 earns its keep and AZ-305 or AZ-400 starts to matter. Glassdoor entries for 4 to 6 years ran from $115K to $186K. The gap comes from total comp, because a bonus or stock can add tens of thousands on top of base. For a fuller breakdown, see Azure cloud engineer salary by experience.

Senior and architect, 7 or more years

AZ-305 targets this tier, and I go deeper on it in Azure Solutions Architect salary. One Glassdoor entry for 7 to 9 years showed $262K total, split into $193K base and $69K additional pay. Another entry for 10 to 14 years showed $98K with no additional pay.

Same title, very different scope. Years alone do not set the number.

What Moves Your Pay More Than the Certificate

Employer type. A consulting firm may lean on base and bonus. A large tech employer may add RSUs on a vesting schedule plus a signing bonus. Compare total comp, never base alone.

Skills around the exam. I would pair AZ-104 with hands-on infrastructure as code, identity and cost management, then add security. That is my judgment, not a survey result.

Location and work style. Cost of living changes what the same salary buys, and remote versus on-site roles often price differently. Check your metro, not just the national average.

Which Azure Certification Fits Your Job Title

  • Sysadmin or help desk moving to cloud: AZ-104.
  • Backend developer: AI-200, which replaced AZ-204.
  • Security analyst: SC-500, which replaced AZ-500.
  • Data engineer: DP-700.
  • DevOps or platform engineer: AZ-400, after real AZ-104 experience.
  • Future architect: AZ-104, then AZ-305.

Confirm exam availability on Microsoft Learn first, since the AI-focused credentials are new.

What an Azure Certification Costs

The US price for both AZ-104 and AZ-305 is $165, per the exam listings I checked, and Microsoft sets prices by country. Because Microsoft requires AZ-104 first, the architect path costs at least $330 in exam fees before any retake.

Renewal costs nothing. You pass a free online assessment in the six months before expiry, and Microsoft Learn extends your certification by one year. Miss the window and you must re-earn it with a paid exam.

So money is the small cost. Your study time is the big one, which makes picking the right Azure certifications that boost salary in the US matter more than collecting badges.

When to Stop Researching and Start Negotiating

More research past this point is just delay. If you hold the certification and have two or three sourced salary ranges, move. My guide on how to negotiate a cloud engineer offer goes further, and here is the short version:

  1. Anchor with sources. Bring the BLS median and two platform ranges, then ask for the top of the band.
  2. Use a competing offer. A second written offer moves a recruiter faster than any certificate.
  3. Negotiate the whole package. If base is capped, ask about a signing bonus, a bigger RSU grant or a shorter vesting schedule.
  4. Time it right. Negotiate after the written offer and before you accept. Also ask whether the employer pays exam fees and renewals.

Common Salary Myths About Azure Certifications

  • Myth: AZ-900 raises your pay. It is an entry credential, and I found no standalone US pay data for it. It opens doors to AZ-104, which has better evidence.
  • Myth: a retired certification is worthless. It stays on your transcript until it expires, and the skills still count. Plan the replacement, though, because you cannot renew it.
  • Myth: every certification adds $10,000. Premium figures are survey averages. They do not prove the exam caused the raise.
  • Myth: AZ-305 alone makes you an architect. You need AZ-104 first, and architect pay follows scope, not a badge.

Salary Growth Timeline: Year 0 to 10

Years 0 to 2: AZ-900 if you need it, then AZ-104, in a junior admin or support role.

Years 3 to 6: AZ-305 or AZ-400, plus your first job change, a common way to reset pay.

Years 7 to 10 and beyond: architect, principal or manager tracks, where level structure and scope drive total comp.

What slows growth: staying in one role without a level change, letting certifications lapse, and holding only retired credentials.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Which Azure certification pays the most in the US?

No public survey cleanly isolates one winner. AZ-305 targets the most senior role, but I found no sourced US pay figure for it. The best sourced number is $148,849 for Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104) in Skillsoft’s survey.

  2. Are Azure certifications worth it in 2026?

For most cloud and infrastructure roles, yes, mainly because they help you pass recruiter filters and cost little. Exams run about $165 each in the US, and renewals are free. Treat any promised premium, such as $10,000, as a survey average, not a guarantee.

  3. Do Azure certifications expire?

Associate, expert and specialty certifications expire after one year. You can renew for free by passing an online assessment on Microsoft Learn in the six months before expiry. Fundamentals certifications do not expire.

  4. Which Azure certification should I get first?

If you are new to cloud, start with AZ-900, then move to AZ-104. If you already work in infrastructure, go straight to AZ-104. Check Microsoft Learn first, because several exams changed in 2026.

  5. Are AZ-204 and AZ-500 still available?

No. Microsoft retired AZ-204 on July 31, 2026 and AZ-500 on August 31, 2026. The replacements are AI-200 and SC-500. Earned certifications stay on your transcript until they expire.

  6. Is AZ-104 or AZ-305 better for salary?

AZ-104 is the entry point and has the stronger public pay data. AZ-305 targets architect roles and requires AZ-104 first. Earn AZ-104, use it on the job, then add AZ-305 as your scope grows.

  7. Does Azure pay more than AWS?

Public data cannot settle this. Skillsoft’s survey put AWS, Google Cloud and Nutanix certifications at the top, though Azure Administrator Associate still averaged $148,849. Your employer’s stack matters more than the logo.

How This Article Was Created

I built this guide from public sources: the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook (May 2024 wages), Skillsoft’s IT skills and salary survey as reported by Campus Technology (November 2024), Glassdoor salary submissions viewed in 2026, Microsoft Learn and Pearson VUE for exam rules, prices and retirements, and Synergy Research Group market share (Q1 and Q2 2026) as reported in trade coverage.

The data runs from 2024 to October 2026. I did not fabricate any figure. Where I found no reliable number, such as AZ-305 pay or the new AI-focused exams, the article says so.

I did not use Levels.fyi or LinkedIn Salary because they do not publish pay by Azure certification. Platform salary pages update often, so check the live numbers before you negotiate.

I wrote this to inform job seekers, not to recruit or advertise.
