TL;DR
One cloud architect job can show two salaries $78,000 apart. That is not a typo. Salary.com reports $124,134 for 2026, while Glassdoor reports $202,599.
Most people hit that wall, grab one number, and either undersell themselves or price themselves out. This guide to Cloud Architect Salary by State (US Breakdown 2026) fixes that. I compare five platforms side by side, state by state, and explain why they disagree.
You will learn which states truly pay more, what an offer is worth after tax, and what to ask for. Want more verified pay data for tech roles? Browse the salary guides at What Is The Salary.
What Is the Average Cloud Architect Salary in the US in 2026?
The state numbers only make sense once you see the national baseline. The honest answer is that it depends on who you ask. Here is what each platform reports for 2026.
National cloud architect salary by platform, 2026
| Source | Reported average | What sits behind the number |
| Salary.com | $124,134 | Average salary, updated September 1, 2026 |
| ERI | $146,330 | Survey data from employers and employees |
| Indeed | $155,817 | 809 salaries from job postings, updated September 20, 2026 |
| Glassdoor | $202,599 | 1,422 anonymous submissions, includes additional pay |
Glassdoor also reports a typical range of $159,525 at the 25th percentile to $260,842 at the 75th. Bonuses and other extra pay push its average above the rest.
If you want the full nationwide picture first, I cover it in my cloud architect salary in the US guide.
Cloud Architect Salary by State: The Highest Paying States
Now the part you came for, cloud architect salary by state. The table below shows ZipRecruiter’s top eight states for 2026 next to Salary.com’s figure for the same state. The dollar amounts differ, but the broad pattern holds.
Cloud architect salary by state, ZipRecruiter top eight vs Salary.com, 2026
| State | ZipRecruiter | Salary.com |
| Washington | $166,759 | $134,598 |
| District of Columbia | $166,380 | $137,441 |
| New York | $161,081 | $131,967 |
| Massachusetts | $160,799 | $135,095 |
| Alaska | $158,565 | $134,375 |
| Vermont | $156,549 | $121,838 |
| North Dakota | $155,787 | $122,620 |
| Oregon | $155,670 | $126,058 |
Washington leads ZipRecruiter at $166,759. That fits the Seattle and Bellevue market, where AWS and Microsoft anchor cloud hiring.
On Salary.com, the District of Columbia comes first at $137,441. California follows at $136,920, then Massachusetts at $135,095, Washington at $134,598, and New Jersey at $134,549. ERI lists California at $168,411 and Boston at $173,557, ahead of Baltimore at $157,188 and Chicago at $155,464.
Alaska, Vermont, and North Dakota show up on ZipRecruiter’s list too. Small job markets can swing on a handful of salaries, so I would not plan a move around those rankings. The reliable top tier is the usual group: Seattle, the Bay Area, Boston, New York, and Washington, DC, where federal and defense work drives cloud demand.
Mid-Market and Lower Paying States
Below the top tier, the cloud architect salary by state spread is smaller than most people expect. On Salary.com, the highest state (the District of Columbia, $137,441) sits $24,628 above the lowest (South Dakota, $112,813). That is about 18%.
Here is how several large tech employment states look on Salary.com: Colorado at $126,654, Illinois at $126,530, Virginia at $125,003, Texas at $121,080, Georgia at $119,727, North Carolina at $117,965, and Florida at $117,456. Alabama sits at $114,042.
ERI tells a higher story. It lists Colorado at $154,767, Iowa at $131,740, Kentucky at $129,324, and Alabama at $130,305. Compare Alabama across the two: $114,042 on Salary.com, $130,305 on ERI. That is a $16,263 difference inside one state.
The $78,465 gap between Glassdoor’s national figure and Salary.com’s is far larger than the gap between the best and worst state on any single platform. Where you live matters. Which source you trust matters more.
City pay follows the same pattern in neighboring roles. My data scientist salary by city page shows how much the metro can shift a tech salary.

Why Every Source Reports a Different Number
Four things explain most of the mismatch.
Where the data comes from. Glassdoor uses anonymous employee submissions. Indeed uses salaries from job postings. ERI blends employer survey data with employee reports. Each method catches a different slice of the market.
Base versus total pay. Some figures count only base salary. Others fold in bonuses and extra pay. At large tech employers, equity can add a lot on top.
Seniority mix. Almost nobody starts as a cloud architect, so every sample leans toward experienced workers. A source with more senior reports shows a higher average.
Sample size by state. Smaller states have thin data, so a cloud architect salary by state ranking can mislead. A few high or low reports can move the average by thousands.
When I compare states, I stick to one source at a time. Mixing Glassdoor for one state with Salary.com for another creates gaps that do not exist.
Cloud Architect Salary by Experience Level
Most people reach this title after years as a cloud, systems, or DevOps engineer, so entry level pay is thin.
Entry level and associate (0 to 3 years)
KORE1, a tech recruiting firm, puts associate cloud architects at $130,000 to $160,000 in base pay. A 2026 guide from Futurense lists AWS cloud architect total compensation at $110,000 to $150,000 for the same stage. The ranges overlap despite different job titles and pay definitions.
Mid-level (3 to 7 years)
Futurense lists $150,000 to $190,000 in total compensation for 3 to 6 years of experience. Jobicy’s 2026 data shows an average of $153,000 for mid-level cloud architects across the US.
Senior, principal, and lead (7 or more years)
KORE1 says a full cloud architect with 7 to 10 years of experience earns about $155,000 to $200,000 in base pay. Jobicy’s senior average is $226,200. KORE1 also notes that senior and multi-cloud specialists can clear $250,000 in base, with total comp at big tech employers running past $400,000.

What Moves Your Salary More Than the State
Industry
Glassdoor ranks the top industries by median total pay: financial services at $184,347, telecommunications at $180,390, management and consulting at $171,579, human resources and staffing at $170,395, and information technology at $164,353.
Financial services pays $19,994 more than IT. The California versus Texas gap on Salary.com is only $15,840. Industry can beat geography.
Certifications and cloud platform
A 2026 guide from Qubit Labs lists AWS cloud architects at $147,236, Microsoft cloud solution architects at $150,241, and Google Cloud architects at $164,369. KORE1 adds that production Kubernetes, infrastructure as code, cloud security, and multi-cloud design tend to lift pay.
Education versus experience
Experience and certifications tend to carry more weight than a diploma. If you are coming from security, my guide to working as a cybersecurity analyst without a degree shows one way in, and the cybersecurity career path covers where cloud security architecture fits. If leadership is the goal, the CISO salary guide shows what the top of the security ladder pays.
Base Salary vs Total Compensation
Most job seekers read an offer by its base number. That is a mistake, especially at employers that pay in stock.
Total compensation adds your annual bonus, any signing bonus, and equity. RSUs are shares granted to you that vest over a schedule, often four years, sometimes with a one year cliff. Stock options work differently, because you pay a strike price to buy shares.
Here is an example, not a reported offer. Offer A is $175,000 base with no equity. Offer B is $155,000 base, $120,000 in RSUs vesting over four years, a $20,000 signing bonus, and a 10% target bonus.
Offer B pays $220,500 in year one: $155,000 base, $30,000 in vested RSUs, $20,000 signing bonus, and $15,500 bonus. In year two it pays $200,500, since the signing bonus drops off. Both beat Offer A, though RSU value moves with the stock price.

Cost of Living and Take Home Pay by State
A bigger cloud architect salary by state number does not always mean a bigger paycheck after rent. On Salary.com, California pays $136,920 and Texas pays $121,080, a $15,840 gap. Washington pays $134,598, which is $13,518 above Texas.
Washington and Texas both skip state income tax on wages, so that $13,518 gap is real money before housing. California taxes wages at graduated rates, and Bay Area rent sits well above most Texas metros. Before you chase the California premium, price out rent, state tax, and commute.
Remote Work and Cloud Architect Salary by State
Remote roles complicate the state question. Some employers pay by location, with bands for high, medium, and lower cost areas. Others pay one national rate. This changes how you should read any cloud architect salary by state table.
Ask the recruiter early which model applies. A flat national rate in a lower pay state means a high salary with lower rent.

Cloud Architect vs DevOps Engineer: Which Pays More?
Plenty of people weigh a move into architecture against staying on the DevOps track. I compared the two side by side in cloud architect vs DevOps engineer salary. For DevOps pay on its own, see DevOps engineer salary in the US and DevOps engineer salary by experience level.
Salary Growth Timeline: Year 0 to Year 10
Treat this as direction, not a promise. The ranges come from different sources.
Cloud architect salary growth timeline
| Career stage | Typical role | Reported pay |
| Years 0 to 3 | Cloud or DevOps engineer | $135,000 to $152,000 base (KORE1) |
| Years 3 to 6 | Mid-level cloud architect | $150,000 to $190,000 total comp (Futurense) |
| Years 7 to 10 | Cloud architect | $155,000 to $200,000 base (KORE1) |
| Year 10 and beyond | Senior or principal architect | Up to $250,000 base for specialists (KORE1) |
Three things speed growth up: changing employers, moving into a higher paying industry such as financial services, and adding cloud security or multi-cloud skills. Three things slow it down: staying too long at one employer, getting leveled below your scope at hire, and skipping certifications.
When to Stop Researching and Start Negotiating
You now have enough data. Past this point, more research is just delay.
Anchor to one source. Pick the platform that matches your offer type. Use Glassdoor for big employers with bonuses and equity, and Indeed or Salary.com for base pay checks.
Use competing offers. One live interview process at another employer changes the conversation. Say you are weighing options, and never bluff.
Negotiate RSUs and the signing bonus. Many employers have more room in equity and one time cash than in base pay.
Ask as a question, at the right time. Try this: “Based on the market data I have seen, I was hoping for X. Is there flexibility?” Do it after the written offer arrives and before you accept.
Common Cloud Architect Salary Myths
Myth 1: The highest paying state is the best deal. Salary.com has California $15,840 above Texas, but rent and state tax can erase that.
Myth 2: Glassdoor’s average is what you should expect. Its figure of $202,599 includes extra pay and leans senior. Indeed reports $155,817.
Myth 3: You can start as a cloud architect. Most people arrive after years as cloud or DevOps engineers, per KORE1.
Myth 4: A certification sets your pay. The Qubit Labs figures put Google Cloud $17,133 above AWS, but industry on Glassdoor shifts pay by $19,994.

How This Article Was Created
I built this cloud architect salary by state guide in October 2026 from public data on Salary.com, ZipRecruiter, ERI, Indeed, and Glassdoor, plus salary guides from KORE1, Futurense, Qubit Labs, and Jobicy. I quote each figure as the source reports it and invented no salary. The latest data point is from September 2026, and the offer comparison above is a labeled example. This article informs job seekers and does not recruit or advertise. Salary pages update often, so check live numbers before you negotiate.
