TL;DR
Two offers land in your inbox. One says Cloud Architect, the other says DevOps Engineer, and the pay gap between them could be zero or more than $40,000, depending on which salary site you trust. That is the catch with any Cloud Architect vs DevOps Engineer Salary Comparison (US): every source tells a different story.
Most people grab one number and anchor to it. Then they either ask for too little or price themselves out. Guessing costs real money, and so does trusting the wrong average.
So I lined up Glassdoor, Levels.fyi, ZipRecruiter, Salary.com, and BLS data side by side, then split it by experience and total comp. Read on to see which numbers hold up, and check more role-by-role pay in our tech salary guides at WhatIsTheSalary.
Cloud Architect vs DevOps Engineer Salary Comparison (US) at a Glance
Start with the table. I kept each platform’s own job title, because that detail turns out to matter.
| Source | Cloud Architect | DevOps Engineer | What to know |
| Glassdoor | $202,599 average total pay (1,422 salaries) | $158,362 average (listed as Cloud DevOps Engineer, 490 salaries) | Self-reported, total pay |
| Levels.fyi | No single architect title | $145,500 median total comp | DevOps page last updated July 2025 |
| ZipRecruiter | $152,207 (listed as DevOps Architect) | $122,950 | May and June 2026 |
| Salary.com | $124,149 | $139,121 | Architect figure from July 1, 2026; DevOps figure from a 2026 roundup |
| Built In | Not listed | $133,817 base, $150,355 total | Base plus $16,538 in added cash |
| Jobicy | $153,100 | $126,300 | July 2026 estimates |
| BLS (closest match) | $134,050 median for computer network architects | No official category | May 2025 OEWS data |
Read down the columns and the problem shows up fast. Cloud architect averages run from $124,149 to $202,599. DevOps averages run from $122,950 to $158,362. The ranges overlap, so a strong DevOps engineer can out-earn an average architect.
When one source measures both roles the same way, the architect wins. Jobicy’s July 2026 estimates put cloud architects at $153,100 and DevOps engineers at $126,300, a gap of about 21%. Glassdoor shows about 28% between Cloud Architect ($202,599) and Cloud DevOps Engineer ($158,362). I calculated both gaps myself.
Salary.com is the odd one out. Its DevOps figure of $139,121 sits above its cloud architect figure of $124,149. That is a good reason not to trust any single number.
Why Salary Sites Disagree (and Which Numbers to Trust)
Four things scramble the numbers.
Titles. Neither job has its own federal category. The BLS tracks computer network architects, the closest match, at a median of $134,050 as of May 2025. DevOps engineers have no official category, so sites estimate them from nearby jobs.
Method. Glassdoor and Levels.fyi rely on people submitting their own pay. Levels.fyi skews toward large tech employers. ZipRecruiter and Salary.com blend postings with models and cover smaller companies too.
Definition. Some sites report base pay only. Others report total pay. Built In shows the split clearly: DevOps engineers average $133,817 in base plus $16,538 in additional cash, for $150,355 total.
Sample size. Glassdoor’s architect figure comes from 1,422 submissions, and its cloud DevOps figure from 490. Bigger samples are steadier, but none of these sites is the truth.
My advice: pull three sources that use the same pay definition, and plan around the middle one.

Cloud Architect Salary in the US
Cloud architects design the whole cloud setup: networking, security, cost, and how AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud pieces fit together. Employers pay for judgment, and judgment usually follows years of hands-on work.
On base pay, most averages land between $124,149 (Salary.com, July 2026) and $153,100 (Jobicy, July 2026). Payscale lists $127,836 in average base for cloud solutions architects with DevOps skills, with total pay topping out near $181,000.
Self-reported total pay runs higher. Glassdoor shows $202,599 on average, with the 75th percentile at $260,842 and the 90th at $324,847. A May 2026 tracker of 1,486 employer-posted architect jobs averaged $219,407. Treat posted figures as a ceiling check, not an average.

DevOps Engineer Salary in the US
DevOps engineers build and run the delivery pipeline: CI/CD, infrastructure as code, monitoring, and incident response. Kubernetes, Terraform, and CI/CD appear in job posts again and again.
ZipRecruiter reported an average of $122,950 on June 8, 2026, with the middle half between $100,500 and $144,000. Levels.fyi lists a median total comp of $145,500, with the 25th percentile at $112,000, the 75th at $183,000, and the 90th at $239,000.
That 90th percentile matters. DevOps engineers at big tech employers, with RSUs and bonuses, can match architect pay. Our page on the DevOps engineer salary in the US walks through the numbers in more detail.
Salary by Experience Level: Where the Gap Narrows
Experience moves pay more than the title does. I used Jobicy’s July 2026 estimates here because it publishes both roles on one method.
| Experience level | Cloud Architect | DevOps Engineer | Architect premium |
| Early career | $104,600 | $87,700 | About 19% |
| Mid-career | $153,000 | $128,250 | About 19% |
| Senior | $226,200 | $196,300 | About 15% |
Two things stand out. First, the gap shrinks at the top, from about 19% to about 15%. Senior DevOps engineers close in on architects, especially when the job includes site reliability or platform scope.
Second, cloud architect is rarely a first job. “Early career” here really means people who just got the title after years as engineers.
Other sources show lower DevOps numbers but the same shape. ERI SalaryExpert data, quoted by EC-Council in 2026, lists $80,988 for entry level, $114,014 for mid-level, and $131,642 for senior roles. Built In shows $84,510 under one year and $149,162 at seven years or more.

Total Compensation: Bonus, RSUs, and On-Call Pay
Base salary is only one line of the offer. Total comp adds the annual bonus, any signing bonus, and stock. At public companies, that stock usually arrives as RSUs on a vesting schedule, commonly over four years. Levels.fyi counts total comp as base plus annualized stock plus bonus, so its numbers will always sit above base-only sites.
Here is a made-up example. Offer A is a cloud architect role at $150,000 base with a 10% bonus, so $165,000. Offer B is a DevOps role at $140,000 base, a $10,000 bonus, and $100,000 in RSUs vesting over four years, so $175,000. The “lower” job wins by $10,000 a year, if the stock holds its value.
On-call is the DevOps wrinkle. Some employers pay a stipend, but reported amounts vary wildly. One 2026 guide I read cites $500 to $2,000 per week. Another cites $500 to $2,000 per month. Ask about it before you sign.
One comparison site rates architect on-call burden as minimal and DevOps as moderate. That is a lifestyle difference worth weighing against the pay.
Where You Live Changes the Math
BLS data for computer network architects, the closest federal match, shows state medians of $168,070 in Washington and $158,870 in California, against $134,050 nationally (May 2025). Washington sits about 25% above the national median.
Washington does not tax wages at the state level, while California taxes income on a sliding scale. High rents in Seattle and the Bay Area can cancel some of that edge, so compare after-tax and after-housing numbers, not headlines.
Remote work adds a twist. One 2026 salary guide puts remote pay for platform engineers in lower-cost areas at 80% to 90% of Bay Area rates at top companies. Ask how an employer sets remote bands before you accept.
City gaps show up in every tech role. For another example, see our data scientist salary by city guide.
What Pushes Pay Up in Each Role
Architects earn more for multi-cloud design, security and compliance frameworks such as SOC 2, HIPAA, and PCI DSS, cost control, and the ability to explain tradeoffs to executives.
DevOps engineers earn more for Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD design, observability, and incident leadership. Moving into site reliability engineer or platform engineer work often raises pay. One comparison site lists a $155,000 median for SRE against $135,000 for DevOps.
Security helps both. Salary.com’s 2026 data puts DevSecOps engineers at $137,478 on average. Our cybersecurity career path guide shows how those skills build over time.
Degrees and certifications. Employers care more about hands-on proof than a diploma. The same skills-first logic runs through our guide on becoming a cybersecurity analyst without a degree. Certifications like AWS Solutions Architect or Azure AZ-305 can help at the margin, but quoted premiums vary widely between guides. I would not bank on a specific number.
The Part Most Comparisons Skip: Job Titles Are Blurry
A lot of cloud architect vs DevOps debates are really arguments about titles. ZipRecruiter’s DevOps Architect average is $152,207, about the same as the architect numbers elsewhere. Glassdoor’s Cloud DevOps Engineer, someone with both cloud and pipeline skills, averages $158,362, with a 90th percentile of $229,560. That sits closer to architect pay than to plain DevOps pay.
Platform engineering blurs the line further. Senior platform roles often pay more at companies that treat the internal platform as a product. Practitioners on one career forum say architects who do not write code see pay stall. That is anecdotal, but it fits the narrowing senior gap in the table above.
Both ladders keep climbing. Principal architect, and staff or principal DevOps roles, sit in the top pay bands. Above those, leadership tracks pay more still. Our CISO salary guide shows where one of those roads ends.

Which Path Pays Better for You, and How to Negotiate
Pick architecture if you like system design, stakeholder meetings, and a clear ladder to principal and executive roles. Pick DevOps if you like hands-on automation and want room to move into SRE or platform work. Plenty of people do both in order, starting in DevOps and moving to architecture around years eight to ten, a timeline one comparison site suggests.
When you have an offer in hand, more research is just delay. Do this:
- Anchor to a range from three sources, not one number.
- Negotiate total comp: signing bonus, RSUs, refresh grants, and bonus target, not just base.
- Use a competing offer by sharing the number. Keep the company name out if you need to.
- Ask for 48 hours to review, then counter once, in writing, with your range.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Who earns more, a cloud architect or a DevOps engineer?
Cloud architects usually earn more. Jobicy’s 2026 estimates show a gap of about 21%, and Glassdoor shows about 28%. The gap narrows at senior level, and Salary.com actually lists DevOps higher.

How This Article Was Created
Figures come from Glassdoor, Levels.fyi, ZipRecruiter, Salary.com, Payscale, Built In, Jobicy, and BLS OEWS (May 2025). Where platform pages show a date, it falls between July 2025 and July 2026, and I checked them in October 2026. I quoted numbers as each platform reported them and calculated the percentage gaps myself. I did not invent any figures. I wrote this to inform job seekers, not to recruit or advertise.
